The Classics

Two mograph classics combine in this nugget from DK: Trapcode Shine and a teapot.

Trapcode Shine, for the uninitiated, is the guilty pleasure of every mograph designer. Shine is to motion graphics what drop-shadows are to graphic designers. You love to hate them. You hate to love them. And at the end of the day, they call softly to you, sweetly singing:

"Use me. Abuse me. Make me yours."

The teapot is a little more obscure and a lot nerdier. Back in the day (which in computer terms was, like, last week), models of teapots such as the one staring in Layer 8 were used to show off the texturing and lighting capabilities of 3D rendering engines. Known as a Utah teapot or Newell teapot, it's an icon of 3D geekdom.

In this context, it's also an object of worship. I for one celebrate the teapot. In the teapot, I find peace.

(I also occasionally find tea.)

Upon my third viewing, I noticed a THIRD classic: the star field. Fantastic.

The Layer Tennis Blog

Tomorrow we continue our series of live, experimental Layer Tennis Exhibitions with a motion graphics match between Matt Smithson and Daniel Oeffinger. As usual, the action starts at 2pm Chicago time. Check the time in your area. What is unusual is that the match won't finish until next Thursday. We'll be posting two layers per weekday. We've always wondered what would happen if we gave a couple artists a lot more time to do each volley and this week we'll find out. Commentary is by Jason Koxvold, who knows a little something about LYT and mo-graf. Jason's Match Preview has been posted and so has the coin-flip. jc-today
