While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my Apple keyboard. ‘Tis some visitor,’ I muttered, ‘tapping at my Apple keyboard -- Tickity, tickity, and nothing more.’
Jillan Tamaki has served to a wet tshirt-clad Jennifer Daniel. (Your humble commentator has the photos of said wet tshirted competitor and is hoping to make a little extra post-match dough on eBay with them. Tweet me up at #lyt for auction info. (Sorry Jennifer, if you're going to pitch me softballs, I'm gonna hit 'em.))1
Being that we're going to be working mostly with illustration here, Jillian has a pretty large advantage with the serve: a little extra time to plan out her first shot. Even so, her serve is indicative of the broad strokes we're likely to see a lot of today. The fast Layer Tennis pace doesn't leave much time for the dozens of gently massaged layers that many intimidating Illustrator™®© tutorials have told me are necessary for creating delicately realistic and nuanced illustrations. So unless these ladies have a lot of macros up their sleeves, we're gonna be seeing a lot of power this afternoon.
When I looked at Jillian's serve, I immediately thought: R. Crumb. I could be wrong because comics are not my strongest suit. Comics fans, my ass could use a vigorous fact-checking on this. At any rate, the serve is definitely influenced by comics. What I'm wondering is: who's the young women sitting at her computer, thoughts blaring behind here? Is this a representation of Jillian's pre-match inner state or a not-so-flattering likeness of her opponent? Let's see what Daniel thinks.
[1] Hey Jim, can I use footnotes? Just checking for later in case I need to use in lieu of triply nested parentheses. ↩
