Before I get to the remarkable first volley in this match, I’ve been informed the “No drinking until layer 7” rule in the LYT bylaws has been suspended for this match. And since geography prohibits me from actually sharing a Pabst Blue Ribbon with Alissa, who did a terrific job with the first match commentary, I’d like to share a NSFW cold one with you all right now. (If you’ve turned up your speakers for the vid, turn them down a little before following that link. No one in an office or under the drinking age should listen to that without headphones.)
I don't think I've ever seen a Layer Tennis volley like Jason's serve here. A simple, beautiful, mysterious glance between passing trains on the Tokyo Metro (shot just days ago by Jason himself). I recently saw the trailer for the Japanese film version of Barry Eisler's excellent novel Rain Fall, about a Tokyo assassin, and this would actually be a better teaser, the eye darting from window to window, making split-second judgments, almost like it's targeting the riders. Creepy and ominous. Crazy but even without the Rising Suns, that shot feels like it could be nowhere but Tokyo, somehow.
I asked Jason what is something you shouldn't do just because you can, and he said, "Actually, all things." It turned out to be an Eastern meditation foreshadowing his initial thrust.
We are moving.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Kevin Guilfoile.
