Two weeks ago, Hubacek out-glassed Glass. If this isnt out-draplining Draplin, I don't know what is.
Perfect, right down to the "yer"s and such. And I teased it in my last commentary without even knowing it was coming. He clearly has been working on this one all along, in his downtime. He's not a student of Layer Tennis, he's a graduate student, and he did a lot of homework.
If there's anything to complain about, it's that Gregory has his own style, and it's pretty brilliant (seen here, here, here, here, and here), and we haven't seen much of it in the playoffs. (Note that Layer 10 of his qualifier hinted at his playoff strategy, lifting elements from the earlier Stirman/Garcia qualifier.)
That said, whatever "style" a designer has, it's moot if it doesn't fit the project. Adaptability and versatility is key to good design, and Greg's working it. If you can knock off any style, and pretty much nail it, does that make you a hack, or the greatest designer of all time? I don't know the answer to that question but I bet the fans have an opinion.
Let's wait and see what kinda damage Aaron inflicts in Volley Ten, then vote via twitter with #LYT and #mrdraplin or #mrhubacek (see notes to the right for more details).
SOUNDTRACK:
The Art-Chantry photocopy catalog collage thing seems to have sprung from one of the greatest masterpieces of design of all time, so let's pull something from that.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Bryan Bedell.
