Oeffinger fails to disappoint. That first shot of the animals on the hill gets me all frothy, but I’m a big fan of the graphics throughout; the idyllic countryside, resplendent in warm sunshine is a great counterpoint to Smithson’s two-colour process.
It's a great characteristic of Matt’s work, and Buck’s - an uncanny ability to blend different textures and styles together to create places that feel almost lost in time. Look at the foreground and you’ll see beautifully-rendered individual grasses, while the background is like a 1950s Boy Scout story. The sky is glowing rather photographically, but the cartoon icebergs in the sky are throwing hard shadows that move across the landscape. The animals have their own thing entirely going on.
And then, lasers.
What’s really going on here, though? Have the young robots awoken from their slumber and gone on a slicing spree? Someone told me yesterday that Albert Einstein once said that if a child could destroy the world, it would. I don’t know if that's true. But maybe it is.
If I have one complaint, it’s a shade too long. We’re notoriously bad at editing our own work. Which is why you normally have another guy whose job it is to do that.
What's up now, Smithson? You've got pretty much the whole weekend to think about what you did.
The boys will each take a day and a half to work and we’ll see Layers Three and Four on Monday afternoon. Follow Layer Tennis on Twitter or jump on the RSS feed for a ping when things go live next week.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by

Cast your votes on The Championship Match. Both Finalists will receive invitations to play in the post-season tournament for Season Four.
Here's how the voting works. Decide who you'd like to declare as winner and then simply tweet their first name following a hash mark. Either #mig or #noper and, this is important, also include #lyt in that tweet. We'll leave the voting open all weekend and announce our Season Three Champion on Monday.
