Shock and Awe

Just like the Iraq war, the conflict was over as quickly as it had begun. The robots’ full-spectrum dominance pounded the enemy into submission, and they were greeted as liberators.

First, they toppled the leader, before continuing to pummel the few remaining objectors. Problem solved! The only thing missing is a man with exaggerated nuts standing on a boat trumpeting nonsense as if he’d served in the military once upon a time. But the Glory! Glory! does just as good a job.

It takes a couple of views to wrap your head around some of the subtleties of this volley. The bird that confused me at first, for example - was this an unmanned drone? - was merely startled by the inexorable rumble of approaching armour.

I would have loved for the sound design to have been a little more detailed. But I’m probably just spoiled by a week of truly awesome work. This last assault from Smithson is so richly multifaceted - poor guy was up all night long - that it’s hardly fair for me to complain about the audio. But I kind of wish the oh-shit moment that ended the last round so well had been taken into account here, and I’m not sure I love the flames and the fireworks. Matt’s style is so unique that it doesn’t always take well to outside influences.

Only one question remains: having won the battle - does he leave the door open for Oeffinger to win the war? Daniel just emailed me: “Just a warning... The finale gets a little bit... Weird.”

Final volley due in 90 minutes, L&Gs. Can. Not. Wait.
