See You at the Party, Richter

Oeffinger rips Smithson’s arms off and throws them down the elevator shaft. I thought you guys were supposed to be buddies?

There are two things I’ve loved about Daniel’s work through this match. First, how cinematic a lot of the volleys have been. His application of colour is astonishing; watch as the darkness falls, the creatures’ eyes stay bright, only to be replaced by wisps of will-o, the mythical burning gasses that people once thought to represent lost souls, surrounding the Chosen One. Slowly forcing oil out of the robots’ eyes seems apt as One crushes their minds; they tumble awkwardly to their knees. I have a feeling this man has watched his share of Miyazaki films.

Second, his unexpected twists have made me lolz more than a few times. And this volley certainly did, as One gets on his body rock, dancing on the bodies of his opponents, taking all the unsettling moments we’ve seen these past ten rounds and making them absurd. It’s the perfect finale to a match that was impossible to call until the last moment as we watched both players push each other harder and further.

Thank you, bros, for burning the midnight oil for a week straight. Thanks Coudal for mixing up the format. Thank you, L&Gs in the audience, for letting us try out this longer-form experiment. Great stuff all round.

Note: Tune in tomorrow for a regular, 15 minutes at a time, match-up between two pro video editors sharing the same bin of materials and swapping an edit list back and forth. That match starts at 2pm Chicago time, check the time in your area.
