Live Layer Tennis: The Next Edition

Composing

Next Live Match in 7 days, 1 hours and 45 minutes.

Two photographers in two cities shooting and posting a photographic dialogue live while a musician created a sound track. That’s the most recent Exhibition Match of live Layer Tennis. Here’s what the competitors had to say afterwards, Peeling Back the Layers.

The week before, two accomplished typographers, Peter Bruhn from Malmö Sweden and Mark Simonson from St. Paul designed a typeface live, in fifteen minute increments. Layer-by-layer commentary was provided by well-known type-geek Grant Hutchinson. Mark has posted an excellent recap, Beneath the Volley of the Fonts on his site.

The new season started out with a bang. Check out Khoi Vinh versus Nicholas Felton with comments by John Nack from our first Friday afternoon’s Exhibition Match. Man, it’s good to be back. Check Khoi's Behind The Layers commentary.

We’re gearing up for the Third Season of live Layer Tennis sponsored by Adobe Creative Suite. We’ll have tons of news about that coming very soon so please make sure you are a Free Season Ticket Holder. While we’re getting all the details together we thought it would be fun to stage a series of Live Exhibition Matches.

We’ve invited lots of new players and commentators to take part in the series and we’ll be experimenting with the Layer Tennis format and structure during these “friendlies.”

Back and Forth: Fifteen Minutes at a Time

What Is Layer Tennis?

We’re hosting a series of live design events called Layer Tennis. This wouldn’t have happened without the support of Adobe® Creative Suite®, the weapon of choice for Layer Tennis players and creative professionals everywhere.

We'll be playing matches using video, animation, sound, photos, type and lots more, but the basic idea is the same no matter what tools are in use. Two competitors will swap a file back and forth in real-time, adding to and embellishing the work. Each artist gets fifteen minutes to complete a “volley” and then we post it to the site live. A third participant, a writer, provides play-by-play commentary on the action, as it happens. A match lasts for ten volleys and when it's complete, Season Ticket Holders tell us what they think and we'll declare a winner, so sign up today.
