From the HQ

Friday we hosted a match featuring two firms with big portfolios of gig posters and other imaginative graphic work. DKNG faced The Delicious Design League with John Gruber providing the play-by-play commentary. Let us know who you think won. Also, check the alphabetical Qualifying Match from earlier in the day. See you on Halloween!

A New Hope

Season 4 of live Layer Tennis kicked off Friday, September 12th with an Around the World Exhibition in which ten designers passed a file around the globe and then Dan Cassaro defeated Jon Contino in our first regular season match. Then Ryan Putnam squeaked by Elliot Jay Stocks in a story-driven match and Brian Taylor and James White sent their match into orbit. We’ll be live here every Friday for more fireworks, thanks to our pals at Adobe Creative Cloud.

The site is new, the archives have been mostly reformatted and we’re ready to go. We’ll be hosting remix contests and lots of other fun things this season, so you’ll probably want to get on the list for the skinny on all that. Oh, do you want to play?

What’s All This Then?

Two competitors swap a file back and forth in real-time, adding to and embellishing the work. Each artist gets fifteen minutes to complete a “volley” and then we post that to the site live. A third participant, a writer, provides play-by-play commentary on the action as it happens.

The players may be designers, animators, illustrators or anything else, and they can do pretty much as they like. There are no real rules, the matches are generally competitive and collaborative. Things progress volley by volley.

A match lasts for ten volleys and when it’s complete, everybody sounds off and together we declare a winner. To see LYT in action, get lost in the archive of past matches.
